For Ashley Tisdale High School Musical 2 and 3
High School Musical 2
High School Musical 2 takes place a year after the events at East High. We start the movie similar to grease with a musical number. Suddenly everyone is singing again. But now everyone is singing differently. Where High School Musical 1 was about having the courage to be who you are. High School Musical 2 is about finding your voice in a world where complacency is king. Suddenly everyone is singing different. East High students have changed. Some are singing rock, others country some are into hip hop. Ms.Darbus announces that one of her former students Brian Mellows recently contacted her with good news. Brian informed her that NATION SENSATION will be holding auditions.
NATION SENSATION of course being the number 1 show across the country entices Sharpay, Ryan, Gabriella, Troy and even Chad and Taylor to audition. In the audition process they get to choose songs they identify with and perform for Stan Stepplin the shows main judge and creator. The kids make the cut due to a lot of bad talent and get to represent there school East High. They sign contracts to appear on SENSATION but suddenly realize the devil is in the details. Stan is very clear and concise about what songs are chosen to be performed and has his own idea of what a SENSATIONAL singer is. Stan does not allow for original material or original songs. If people want to hear your own songs they can....when they buy your debut CD. Until then they stick to the program. The kids did sign a contract so they make due with the best they have. At first it's ok but later the songs don't mesh with their personalities. They don't represent them accurately so they cant relate to the music. This causes many of them like Chad and Taylor to be booted off the show. They say the fault lied with the songs being really bad. Stan says there are no bad songs only bad singers. Brian starts to side with the students. But since Stan's the Man Brian has no control over the songs or the direction of the show. Troy,Gabriella,Sharpay and Ryan have become overnight successes. Some start to let the success go to their heads.
(Sharpay...Ryan and even Troy) Rumors start to go wild about Troy and Terrina Tosh having a relationship. This hurts Gabriella because she has developed feelings for Troy and the both of them have been to nervous to ask each either to go on an actual date. Finally with her 17th Birthday around the corner Troy has the perfect present he's going to give Gabriella a ring to be his girlfriend and he's going to do it by singing he and Gabriella's song "Start of Something New." But Terrina tells Troy about an emergency song change and Troy loses track of time and misses Gabriella's birthday. Gabriella's friendship with Kelsi turns sour because she knows the songs she wrote for Gabriella are good but the ones Gabriella performs on SENSATION are bad but no one has the courage to stand up to Stan. Kelsi also has a secret crush on Chris Canyon and fears he likes Gabriella instead of her. Gabriella angry at Troy for missing her birthday goes off script on SENSATION and sings one of her own songs she wrote with Kelsi. The reaction from the audience goes well but not with Stepplin. During commercial he goes backstage and demands Gabriella be expelled for her stunt. But the shows executives say it's not up to them who stays or goes. It's up to the people. Stan then takes matters in his own hands and changes the voting results from the envelope from Chris's name to Gabriella. Brian Mellows discovers this and threatens to expose Stan. Stan says if he does expose him he wont renew his contract for next years Sensation. Brian tells Stan why would he renew his contract if his current one has just been terminated...he quits Sensation. Brian Mellows and Darbus decide to host their own show at East High. Where students will be able to sing their own songs. Chris later finds out from Gabriella it was he who was supposed to be booted off and decides to do the honorable thing and drop out of SENSATION and perform at East High instead. Afraid reporters will soon learn the full story from Chris or Gabriella Stan Stepplin decides to have America vote for the winner of SENSATION on the following episode. The final show airs the same night with Troy taking on Terrina and Sharpay. Sharpay has wanted to win SENSATION so much she has shut everyone out. Ryan,Zeke, and even Darbus. After seeing how Terrible Terrina is to someone she realizes how terrible she has been as well. If it weren't for Darbus she wouldn't be where she is. Sharpay decides to go off script and perform a duet with her brother Ryan who was voted off. Chris Canyon blames himself for the turnout saying if he hadn't left SENSATION the show wouldn't be having it's finale a week earlier. Kelsi says he did the right thing no matter what even though his reasons where mainly because he likes Gabriella. Chris says Kelsi is wrong about one thing, he likes Gabriella...but he likes Kelsi much more. Chris and Kelsi kiss! Troy finds out from Terrina she made it so he had an emergency song change. Seeing she's not as terrific as he thought. Troy realizes where he needs to be. LIVE on Television he spills the truth about Stan Stepplin and his show SENSATION getting the audience to applaud...he asks everyone on Television to visit East High if they can and see the true Nation Sensation Gabriella Montez. The effect is staggering as thousands pile into the auditorium. Some even donate cash through letters. There is more than enough to keep the music program alive for the next 30 years. The network executives even attend and find out Brian worked on the show and award him Stan's position. When Stan tries to attack Troy, Troy's father knocks Stepplin out. All that remains is for Troy to tell Gabriella the truth and say what a jerk he's been. He asks for her forgiveness in front of the world. They sing their duet and finally kiss! Troy and Gabriella are now officially together!
So that's my HM2 here's my HM3
High School Musical 3
Yes it is that time. Senior year for Troy,Sharpay,Ryan,Chad,Taylor, and Gabriella. After spending the summer on the SENSATION mall tour the kids are back and getting ready to take the SAT's and start preparing for College. Yeah right! It's SENIOR YEAR BABY! SENIORS RULE! Sharpay is predicting Troy and Gabriella will be Prom King and Queen since everyone knows they are boyfriend and girlfriend. There's just one problem. Where is Gabriella? Troy starts the first day of school but doesn't see Gabriella. Has anyone seen her? The mystery is revealed Gabriella is now a Cheerleader! Surprise! But she isn't the only one. So is Ryan! Chad is planning the best senior prank ever. Taylor is already making sure her future room mate keeps up with the curriculum. Sharpay is planning the Senior Prom. Troy is still remembering the amazing summer he and Gabriella had together but his father wants him to get his head back in the game. He is really pushing for Troy to get a full scholarship and play for East University and he does! Everything seems to be going great until early admittance rears it's head and Gabriella gets accepted to EUCLID which is an Engineering and Mathematics firm. This is great except for the fact EUCLID is all the way in Snowy Colorado! Troy's world is shattered. How can he and Gabriella remain together! Suddenly Troy dedicates his year to trying to keep he and Gabriella together. High School Musical 3 is about moving to the next stage in your life. Chad is angry with Troy for spending his senior year talking about Gabriella. It's seems that all he talks about is his girlfriend and not enough time is spent with his best friend. Scouts come to the game but all they see is Troy. All they care about is Troy. Chad was relying on basketball since his grades were so low. His SAT scores were average. Chad needs some sort of scholarship to go to college but it went to Troy and Troy doesn't even care about Basketball he's a singer. But Troy is still undecided as to what to do. As is Gabriella. EUCLID is an amazing opportunity but it would mean never seeing Troy again. Troy realizes the only connection that can keep he and Gabriella together would be singing. Kelsi and Sharpay become good friends. Zeke will be going to culinary school. Ryan decides he's going into choreography like his idol Wade. Taylor does not score a perfect score on her SAT. In fact East High's only student to ever score a perfect score on the SAT is Gabriella Montez. Taylor with a score of 1534 to Gabriella perfect 1600. Chad asks for a tutor to help him and Taylor says she is to busy studying for the SAT herself. Chad thinks it's real selfish of her that she is retaking the test just to get a perfect score to compete with Gabriella when she has the 2nd highest score in the history of the school. Gabriella offers to tutor Chad. Chad ends up pulling the prank but is found out. He acted alone. But no one believes he pulled off such an elaborate prank on his own. The Principal claims Chad isn't smart enough to pull off something so big. Since there is no proof Chad acted alone and none that he didn't. The Principal selects the Usual Suspects Sharpay,Troy,Gabriella,Ryan,Chad, and Taylor to miss their Prom and go to School instead and clean up. If they don't show up and fulfill their punishment they will not be allowed to attend Graduation........
So how does it end? I'll never tell :)
Anyway yeah hope that helped get your head in the game for sequels. HM2 and HM3 it may seem so much to take in now especially now that everyone is releasing solo albums but I was compelled to write this months ago. I did the same for Cars and Pixar. At least this way I can actually get the message to someone involved with the film. I think it's cool you get on Youtube and while I wont say High School Musical is the greatest Disney Musical I've seen.(Love me some Pete's Dragon) It along with Cheetah Girls has been entertaining for my niece and cousin to watch and enjoy. (Ok I secretly like it to.) Either way I hope I didn't bore you too much and offered a glimpse at a HM2 and HM3.

My Cars Review
Yes I saw Cars. The question your wondering is...did it suck? Suck isn't the word for this film. The word I keep coming back to use is WASN'T. That's all I can say. It WASN'T great, good, bad,or sh it It's none of these. It inspires nothing because that what this films aspires to be. Nothing. It's meh and bland. My prognosis. It's the yellow caution light. Cars WAS a big fat pile of yellow caution light. In the film George Carlin plays a car named Filmore who's routine involves staring at the yellow traffic light blinking. That's the biggest metaphor for what this film is. A yellow light. What the hell am I talking about? Cars is a yellow light. It's not green which would signify greatness like say Finding Nemo or Toy Story 1 & 2 (Monsters Inc. and Incredibles are great too!) and it aint red which would signify awfulness.(A Bug's Life) So it teeters off into yellow, and remains there. Depending on the driver (or moviegoer for this metaphor) to come to there own conclusions on what this means to them.
Yellow means many things to many people. To some a yellow light means go faster, be dangerous, take a chance, and speed up you can make it. That's what Why Cars Will Suck was. I was the kid in the car telling John Lasseter. "Punch it. We can make it." But I was sitting way too far back in the car to be heard (Florida). So Lasseter chose to do what others do when a yellow light comes on they slow down. It's not worth the risk. Why go faster? What's the purpose? You could be stopped by a police officer, recieve a ticket, lose your license,or even worse crash, be injured, and die. It's not essential. It's not worth the risk. Slowing down doesnt mean you missed something. There's no need to rush. Unless of course your in a hurry. Being in a hurry to where? Work, school, an appointment,a wedding,a meeting,an event, or for a life and death situation a hospital. Cars the movie was in no need to hurry. Because there was no where to hurry too. The release was pushed back to June 2006 from the previous November 2005 because it was expected to have better box office in summer than in fall. But we can now see it's opening weekend of 62 million was lower than Finding Nemo's and The Incredibles. Disney and Pixar were "divorcing" but coming to agreements for over 2 years and there was never any pressure or bitterness from Disney put on Pixar that would instill fear that their film would be scrapped if their contracts would not be renewed or released without their approval whether they liked it or not. Not like what happened with Toy Story 2. Even the death of a friend Joe Ranft was probably the only thing that happened during this production that might slow the film down and ruin morale. A set back since he is seen at many of the story meetings. (Losing Joe Ranft would be akin to losing Phillipa Boyens or Fran Walsh during the making of LOTR.) But the show did go on with four other writers. A dedication is made to him in this film about ironically the very device that took his life away. A car. And the last character he plays...well more on him later. So your saying by now what does all of this sh it have to do with the FILM. We asked for a movie review not an autobiography.
Well that's the problem nothing in this film I responded too. There's a moment. Only one where I gave a sh it Lightning's cocky ass decides to run on gas alone. But everyone tells him to change his tires. He doesn't and they burst. Seeing this as an oppurtunity. Chick Hicks, and The King speed up as Lightning is inches away from crossing the finish line. This actually got me involved. I wanted Lightning to win. It added some suspense and tension. Does he win by a tongue...nay. It's a tie. His tongue doesn't get him first place. We dont care about first place because Nascar is all about going in circles very fast many times. Laps as they call it. Unlike the Pod Racing scene in Phantom Menace which from start to finish shows you how pod racing works, introduces the racers and gets you involved in the story about Anakin. Nothing like that is in this race. We know this is a warm up for THE big race at the end. There's no sense of danger. No sense of speed like in the pod race and that was a film released in 1999. Only in that final moment at the end with the tires bursting everything is pretty much all hype and dissolves to move us through to that moment. Being at this Race I wasn't drawn in. Look at Goblet of Fire when you visit the Quidditch World Cup (even though we never see the match) we are still taken away by it's scope. Here the animators try and get the point across Lightning is a prick who thinks only of himself and wants to be sponsored by Dinoco. But they hit us over the head with it to many times. His truck Mack ends up driving him to California and is falling asleep. Lightning promises to stay awake. He falls asleep. I have experienced this before. Returning home from a trip to Orlando we were maybe 26 minutes away from arriving and the driver was nodding off. Keep in mind we are going 90 MPH. Since I was sitting in the front I kept on doing distracting things to wake him up. I'd subtly keep him awake by annoying him with questions such as "Hey what band is this on the radio."..."How long do you think it'll take you to unpack your stuff?".."Are you going to do it tomorrow?" Questions I didn't give a sh it about. But they kept him up. I had a cup with ice in it. So I'd shake the cup loudly. I too was tired but knew I'm in the front for a reason. Everyone is asleep and if I dont keep the driver up we might crash. The point of this story. I stayed up for the sake of not getting killed in a car crash but I did it in ways that weren't "HEY WAKE UP BITCH!" every 4 seconds. Nothing like this is ever shown. Lightning forces his decision onto Mack. Mack tells him he needs rest Lightning assures he will keep him up. But we dont get a scene with these characters showing that process. Lightning doesn't come up with a song like Dory with a "Just keep driving." Or even a game. Something inventive to keep Mack up. Something funny and true to the character of Lightning's ego like talking about his past racing stats or wins. Something that would not be working and putting Mack to sleep. SOMETHING! ANYTHING INVENTIVE! No we cut immediately to Lightning fast asleep and then I get my wish for something inventive were these Fast and Furious gang of Cars see Mack nodding off and decide to have some fun with him and change their hip hop esque music to a quiet slow jam to put him to bed. Mack does sleep and this sets off the chain of events leading to Lightning exiting the truck then being lost. The moment where Lightning is lost reminded me alot like when Marlin desperately trying to chase the boat to get Nemo. But in this film that is never explored. You have to keep in mind these are all Cars. What would a family of Cars traveling home look like? And what if a baby car got lost on this scary highway away from it's family? I know it's going into Finding Nemo territory. But I was thinking about this and not about him finding Mack which the audience already knows he wont. But we see Lightning and he chases what he thinks to be Mack and a scene and he tries to out run the train and the train gives him a "O Hell No Mother F kface face. And Lightning ends up in Radiator Springs and I'll stop because we pretty much know from the trailers where this is all headed. Let me get into the characters of this town.
Doc Hudson - A car that could have had his own movie. I remember when he first appeared on the screen a man sitting next to me said "Paul Newman." It could have been because this movie was so mass marketed he knew Paul Newman was playing the Doc. (This being his latest role his last role was in Road To Perdition.) Me...I think it's because he respected the man as an actor. Hudson Hornet. I want to hear more about him as Frodo would say. The retelling of this should have been seen from another perspective. Hudson's old timer not the young hot shot who doesn't want to stay in town. Look at the relationship between Luke and Obi Wan, Doc and Marty, Max and Bloom (Rushmore), Bob and Charlotte (Lost In Translation), Enid and Seymour(Ghost World). People look at old people and see them as old. But we see with Morgan Freeman,Clint Eastwood,Ian Mckellen and Christopher Lee. These old actors aren't just old frail little men. They have lived. They have knowledge and presense and when they speak you listen. I mean my god look at Ed Wood. Bella Legosi and Ed Wood's dynamic t's beautiful. It's earned. You feel one day when Johnny Depp one of the finest actors of our generation reaches old age and he's not a box office draw people will still want to see him in movies because he is a GREAT actor. Same as Al Pacino. Same as Bill Murray. It's sad most older actors are only ever a punchline "Oh my teeth fell out." Or some bull sh it. The story of the old sage and the young kid is good one. It worked between Miyagi and Danielson (yes I know that's not the characters name), it worked between Yoda and Luke. Here it does not work. Because from the moment Hudson sees Lightning he wants him gone. It is Sally that forces them into being. The story between Lightning and Hudson was the wrong way to go pairing them up at the end like a coach in the corner of the fighter. It isn't earned it just arrives. There is no fight left in Hudson. In fact his character only left racing not by choice but because of an accident. A crash took him out. And he found Radiator Springs. He realized people love you when your up but hate you when your down. It's like Michael Jordan taking the bulls to 3 Championships then breaking his legs and sitting out the season. Only to make a comeback and have no one really give a sh it. In the end of this film everyone is amazed to see Hudson return. Why? Suddenly they respect this old timer? Something doesn't add up. If someone didn't care about him it sure as hell wasn't the race car fans it was either the press, lousy manager, the racing association,or some jealous race cars. Yet Hudson has us believe he was treated with such hostility. No. I think we didn't get the real story. And never will. Jessie got a musical montage in Toy Story 2. We even see information on Syndrome's character in Incredibles. But not Doc. Here we are just told. The reality is Hudson stopped caring about winning. Those empty cups didn't mean the same thing they did. Suddenly this racer just didn't have a reason to race. I suppose it happens to anyone. They stop the ability to be great and just settle with being. Now I'm not saying this would have worked but bare with me. Imagine if this film had followed Doc Hudson. And we got Million Dollar Baby with Cars. Even that would have been more interesting since it'd have focused less on catch phrases and been solely about story. Pixar would never attempt a Million Dollar Baby where Hudson plays Eastwood and Lightning or hell even Sally is the Hilary Swank part. They'd never go to the places that film went with Car animations. Instead they decided to focus on Lightning.
Lightning- There's only one thing the animators want Lightning to win. Acceptance for that stupid catch phrase. They tried to force CA POW, CA CHOW whatever the f ck that dumb sh it was on the world. If it's a good catch phrase let the people decide it is. "To infinity and beyond." It works. It's not forced at you. Works for the character. You buy it. Your sold. I never believe this character is anything but a stereotype. Even Flik from Bugs Life (Pixars worst) had a personality. Lightning is all plot. When the town wakes up and sees the road half paved looking beautiful is probably the only real place to dig for some sense of character. It was a big f ck you to all the Cars saying. "Yeah you thought I would never do it. But I did it and without any of your help or advice." Lightning has alot in common with Mr.Incredible.
Both like to work alone, both strive for greatness, they're both red, they like southern women, they keep memorabilia of themselves and thats pretty much where it ends. Maybe it's that the voice actor Owen Wilson just isn't very good on his own as a leading man. He works best when he is working with someone. Vince Vaughn,Wes Anderson (writing wise),Luke Wilson,Bill Murray. Which leads me to...
Mater- Is playing Dory. But without the Ta as he'd say. The Ta for Dory was Short Term Memory. Mater is just stupid because the screenplay must have it be so. He has to have some screws lose and be a dumb downed hillbilly who says GIT R DONE(ok it was only once). He doesn't struggle with it like Dory. He doesn't try and get smarter and where not sure if he's born retarded or just ended up that way. The dumber a character the more likeable and child like. So most of the laughs go to Mater of course. He drives backwards. A character trait that is unnecesary unless Mater did it to get back at those who teased him for being "special". He can do something other Cars cant. This I can buy. Apparently he does it because Lightning will use it later in a race. Now had this backward driving thing been earned. Like Mater kept trying to do it for years and all the Cars in Radiator Springs would tease him saying he's to stupid to do it. But Lightning helped him finally do it successful. It would strengthen the bond. Show another side of Lightning. Maybe even Sally or Doc could have seen him secretly at night teaching Mater to backwards drive. The way Gil taught Nemo to get himself out when he got sucked in the tube. Nope none of that here.
Sally - Is The Princess character from Bugs Life. Trying to keep things together when she doesn't have a clue. I had no problems with the voice actress but I never felt her and Lightning should be together. Even in the end there's no "kiss" or anything. She is more concerned with tourism but one wonders why? Is there a Tax Car collector? We know Sally knows without money (which we never see) business will close down. But it already looks like business is dead.
Theres a scene where two Minivans pull into town and Sally greets them. They obviously are lost and want to find the interstate but are bombarded by the towns Cars. Now imagine if this was you at Disneyworld and you got lost and wanted to go see the "real" characters. Your trying to find Magic Kingdom (they're trying to find the Interstate). But these sub rate Car characters keep annoying you with their "tasks." Ooo you do a paint job...I'd rather go play with Dash...Oh but you change tires...I wonder what Sulley and Mike are up to. The characters are desperate to keep them there and when Lightning is saying to help him. He is being held against his will. You feel he's saying "I'm stuck here when I could be up there with Nemo, Mr.Incredible, Woody, Buzz, Mike, Sulley,Boo, and all the other great Pixar characters one would travel across country to see.
The ENDING- You could see this one miles away. I speak of course for the happy wrap it all up ending where Radiator Springs is put back on the map and the town flourishes. Not Lightnings pause from the finish line. Where we get Cool Runnings. Lightning wins the respect of the world. Where as #86 Chick Hicks (ironically the year I was born) gets sh it on for finishing first.
THE WORLD - Excellent. Pixar knows details and I'm sure it'd take a making of book to uncover many hidden gems. So many clever things work for these cars. But it still leaves many unanswered questions how they do things not having hands or opposable thumbs. Like print text, edit live feeds, make Lightning Bobble Heads, wire complicated cables, make flags,t-shirts, and any other such advertisments? Lasseter said he was fascinated with showing how Cars do things without humans yet were not ever told and rarely shown. Since humans invented everything in this world things should have been reinvented. The brake pedals that activate many things are one such device. Thats probably the only thing I picked up on. Everything else is done in some form of robotic device. (Crane, lift, arm) We must just assume THEY know how such and such works and that's good enough.
LUIGI - Tony Shaloub is doing the same voice he did for Primo in Big Night. It's essentially the same character except now he's a car and loves Ferrari's instead of Food.
GUIDO -The little guy has a "Bubbles" moment. I liked the fact the wind would hit the sign and knock over the tires and the little guy kept straightening it out. A small character trait that shows volumes and much funnier and not forced like the Water Truck named Red who we never find out why he is so silent. But will later investigate to see he's silent because the voice playing him is now forever silent. Joe Ranft didn't get to finish giving this character life and personality. When the water truck knocks down the stacked tires (twice) it's forced laughter. "Ha ha he keeps doing this."
(Filmore, Ramone, Sarge, Sheriff, Lizzie, Red and Flo [who never surpasses the Flo in Finding Nemo])
THE REST OF THE CARS - in Radiator Springs keep trying to win us over by what they do not who they are. I dont care that Ramone can give me a paint job that's not why I should like him. Woody doesn't have all the bells and whistles a Buzz Lightyear toy has but he has personality and is fun to play with. Woody kicks ass and is memorable he's special and a fun toy. No Car in Cars ever achieves a level that makes me want to drive them. In fact The Toys kick the Cars assess in so many ways. They achieve what these Cars couldn't in spades. Here were told how to feel. Were spoon fed information. We must like these Cars because the world has passed them by. The Cars are to desperate to be liked. Except Doc who just wants to be forgotten because apparently that's what he feels the outside world has done. Doc says he cares about Radiator Springs. But did he even attempt to use his celebrity to bring in some business. No? You feel the Doc just found a bunch of unloved Cars and decided to stay with these losers. They may be good Cars but they sure as hell aint memorable ones. Theres never a scene of realization that Doc has lied to these Cars for all these years. "You were a race car!" But why would we care. We dont. I had to go to imdb to get the names of most of these cars. Which show's how great characters jump out at you and stick with you.
You know there's no way to go about this. This is a Pixar film that WASN'T great. It was MEDIOCRE. And apparently that's ok with the fans. But for me. A true fan. This is a huge blow. I should be angry but I'm done with anger. I'm all out of emotions going with this thing for over a year. If there is one thing to be angry at. It's the anger in knowing mediocrity is what reigns even at Pixar. Or as Increbile says "They keep finding new ways to celebrate mediocrity." So I suppose if Cars is what you wanted celebrate. Celebrate the film for just being. But not me. Count me out. This film could have been somebody it could have been a contender. Lasseter said he had two roads to travel with this premise "The Secret Life of Cars." Which would include humans ala Toy Story. Or this. I prefer the secret life of cars. But I could see how an entire world of Cars is an Aqaba to still conquer and Pixar has not conquered it. But someone one day will. Aqaba? Theres a moment in Lawrence of Arabia. A true masterpiece where Lawrence goes to think and be alone. You know what he's thinking? "How can I take Aqaba?" Everyone's already told him it's impossible. That it can not be taken without an excessive amount of force. There is no way Lawrence is going to take it. Not now, not ever. So why waste time thinking about what can never be done? Because Lawrence knows.. "It can be done. It will be done. And I will be the one to do it. I just need to figure out how." It doesn't matter that he is English, white skin, and knows nothing of the dessert. He realizes his limitations, what is available to him, and how many men he has to do it with in a little amount of time. He realizes he must take the insane path and attack them from behind. To do this he must cross the Neffud dessert. This is who John Lasseter was before Toy Story. His Aqaba was a 3D Animated Picture. No one had ever made a 3D Animated picture. It was said to be to expensive and no one would watch it. But Lasseter thought different. This is why LOTR was what it was. Peter Jackson was in Aqaba mentality knowing he could make LOTR. They said it's impossible and it could not be done and even if it could it sure as hell wont be done by some guy in New Zealand with no Blockbusters to his name. Who the hell is Peter Jackson? He is no Steven Spielberg and has no ILM. This is what Peter faced but he knew LOTR could be done. And he would be the one to make it. What was Walt Disney's Aqaba? When he set out to make Snow White the first 2D animated film. There is no Aqaba mentality here for Cars. Because there is no doubt a film with only talking Cars would succeed made by Pixar creatively and financially. Everyone has given Pixar a free ride in reviews, in the press, and in interviews. Everyone has defended Pixar and put me down. Even though the general consesus was this is a weak story and not Pixar's best they let it slide because the visuals looked good and it entertains for two hours. They let them stay in yellow and make something mediocre. Well mission accomplished. This film Cars. It's an allegory for the future of Pixar. Right now Pixar can render essentially a 90 minute film in little over 40 days.(I said Render not make a film, this doesn't account for the man hours only the final render put to film print) In 4 years you know they'll cut the the time down to 20 days. Four years after that 6 days. Just look at what they've accomplished in 11 Years. Imagine the next decade. That's how things go. Slow to blazing fast. It'so funny this film talks about the Interstate when they dont realize Pixars Interstate is Renderman. And that saving those 10 minute drives is essentially symbolism for Pixar saving 10 Days to Render. Good you say or bad? When you can blaze through rendering it means you have time to do MORE. You have extra time so do you take a vacation? Sure when the movies done until then your paid to work. So you use the extra hours to come up with MORE scenes. You can SHOW MORE MORE MORE. But what would animators do in those 10 days while waiting. Look at Stanton he said he would just get in a car and drive and come up for scenes in Nemo. The fewer waiting time is going to speed through the process. (There are PRO's and CON's to this issue.) Not giving animators time to think,be bored,be angry, whatever. That time is going to have to happen in the Pre Production. Robert Rodriguez said. In Hollywood you solve problems by using the money hose. Essentially throwing money at the problem. Where as those without the money hose solve problems with ideas. Not having Rendering be a problem at Pixar will dictate decisions. Eleven years ago with no money for these films and not enough time to render someone would have said
"Hey lets make a montage of Chick Hicks winning the Dinoco Sponsorship to frighten Lightning."
And the reply would have been.
"No it'd take months to render and take up all our computers processing power."
Response
"We could ask Disney to BUY more computers to handle the extra work."
Voice of reason
"Yeah but is the scene really essential? Does anyone have a BETTER idea how to convey that information?"
That was Pixar circa 1995. Pixar circa 2006 has 700 animators and 3,000 plus computers. And the number is growing per film. It's expected of them to do MORE so today the decision to make the Chick Hicks montage even though it is unimportant would be a yes. Pixar has control and can push the releases back because as people say "They are Pixar they've earned it. If they need MORE they should get more." Thats what this film is MORE. Millions of Cars can be put on screen but do we need to see millions of Cars? When there are only three in this entire film worth the render. Doc Hudson,Lightning and Mater. We see now these technologies can create a sea of armies pretty soon it'll be oceans. Is more better? Pixar has always done the best with limitations. Toy Story 1 today could be rendered so much faster than the first. Imagine if you gave Lasseter the tools he had for Cars to work on Toy Story back in 1995. He'd do exactly what Lucas did to Star Wars in 1997. He'd show us things that really were never needed to be shown. The Special Editions and The Prequels are proof that just because we can show Yoda fighting Sidious in the Senate or Obi Wan vs Anakin on a Lava Planet for 10 minutes simple works better. The Originals are still the best. The Pixar team is like the little car Luigi that everyone made fun of at the end of this film and suddenly changed Lightnings tires like a bolt of lightning. This is who Pixar is. There this quick and this skilled. Soon Rendermans will be in the hands of many other CG Studios and 3D will go along the way of 2D. Everyone will be making one. Hell thats pretty much all the trailers shown in Cars were. 3D Films. Pixar is a different company 11 years later and one thing is they work much faster but whats moving slower is the stories. In fact thats pretty much the one thing that refused to work fast with this production and always will. The story. Eight years it took for this story. It's been in John's head since 1998. Then in 2000 on a trip with his family (this years most told Director story since Jackson and his "I saw Kong when I was 9 years old" story)and 6 years,19 plus drafts, and almost 5 writers later it's in theaters. If anything is going to be slower and slower is thought provoking original screen plays. It's story that's kept Indy 4 and Die Hard 4 from arriving in theaters. It's story that is the weakest part of this movie.Everything shines. But the story. It's cliche. You knew from the trailers, from the premise where this was all headed. This was a remake of Doc Hollywood.
In fact it's no coincidence the two weakest Pixar movies are those in which there story's are just essentially re tellings of other stories.(A Bug's Life and now Cars.) A Bugs Life is a retelling of (Seven Samurai really and Magnifcent Seven which was a retelling of 7 Sam)Three Amigos. Cars retells Doc Hollywood. Bugs Life just made Three Amigos 3D animated with insects. Cars just makes Doc Hollywood into an animated film with Cars. Where Magnificent Seven and Fistful of Dollars succeded as remakes of Seven Samurai and Yojimbo is they didnt just substitute cowboys for samurai, swords for pistols and everything was the same. They took a tired genre and said hey you could do this with cowboys in a western landscape! Because it's the same philosophies coming into play. Sergio Leone and John Sturges made excellent retellings. I can't say the same for John Lasseter's Cars. But I have a feeling there are great ideas that great minds and great eyes will later be able to extract and steal from Cars to form something better in some other form. The same way Lucas looked at old pulp comics and sci fi to get his Star Wars together. I can tell you now. If I could have taken a next generation console controller and then hit start and what I got in REAL TIME was Cars I'd be content. The Cow tipping scene. It's great if this were a video game. Great level in a Cars game. "Ok now Lightning Hold Y To Rev Your Engine Then Release! You must tip all the Tractors!" Then the level starts and after about 8 tractor tips they decide to run and you must chase them on your next generation console wondering how graphics got to look this good. This movie is perfect for game adaptation when PS4 or PS5 come around and can handle this world. Because in a game your less concerned for story (not that story isnt important in games Metal Gear Franchise,Zelda series,Halo) but more important in having fun and roaming immense levels.(Halo) I can only say I'd ever revisit Cars as a 50-60 dollar game when REAL next generation arrives (sorry Wii,PS3,360) but not on DVD. But not all is lost. This film is to be exhibited. The amazing visuals are great to show off your sets and show off your HDTV's. Visually this is ahead of any CG done since well...the Incredibles. But if a pretty face is all this has to offer theres no need to revisit this film the same way no one revisits Final Fantasy Spirits Within. All style no substance. It's a shame really. The film had such potential.
So looking through all the sh it I wrote and past my Why Cars Will Suck style review. How did the audience react? How would people who just occasionally watch movies feel? I never felt the audience cared for the movie. One family got up and started to leave after Lightning dragged in Chick Hicks. I've seen every Pixar film in theaters except Bug's Life (thank god) and in those the audiences generally loved the films. The reacted and responded to the right moments. The best reactions being of course Finding Nemo (Pixars best film im my opinion). Most of the reactions if any go to Mater. Since as I said he's this films Dory. But doesn't get Dory's memorable scenes. I mean who can top such laughs from lines like "Just keep swimming, No eating here tonight you on a diet, some monkey has my money,Nemo...thats a nice name,~Dory speaking whale~,and Are you my conscience?" Just typing them brings smiles to my face. Delivered by someone I generally dont like as an actress. Dory at least can forget if someone is hurting here. When Mater takes off Lightning's boot and he escapes there not a sense of hurtfulness? It was just "yeah I'm dumb." Well that's pretty much what you get dumbed down comedy. Tractors farting. In fact there's probably 3 Mater Moments worth nothing "He pissed in a cup!... Mater spelling Kissing (the 1st time good 2nd time sh it)... and Mater talking to Lightning explaining why Sheriff is crying." The vibe from this film is it's gorgeous to look at and Maters funny but not Pixar's best. Family's will be entertained and kids which is difficult to do in these films. So in closing. I feel exactly how Harry Knowles must have after his Scooby Doo Rant. Most of my energy and emotions went into a year of this whole Why Cars Will Suck thing. I'm pretty much energy drained and want to put it all behind me. But the past has a way of being dug up.I said what needed to be said and could have said a whole lot more (novel length) but I'll end with saying to Pixar.
Right now Pixar is in a state of yellow. After Cars we can see Ratatouille is a taste of yellow to come until they go back and make sequels to the greens (Toy Story,Monsters Inc. Finding Nemo, Incredibles) or create some new greens. Disney made some green lights then started to go into yellows until it went into red, then green again, then yellow until Pixar turned them green. Is Pixar turning yellow. No. They already are. The direction of the company has no clear vision anymore. Where is it there company is headed for the next decade? Is it 2D? Is it Live Action? Will they stay in 3D but shift to telling stories within a genre? Incredibles showed seeds of more adult fare (referencing sex, affairs, and even teen isolation.) Does Pixar have a The Graduate in their future? Could you ever see these guys following some Benjamin Braddock being seduced by a Mrs. Robinson (of course only alluding to sexuality never showing). Or even a situational comedy like Office Space. You can't tell me characters like Milton couldn't be the basis of a story for a Pixar film. Minus bad words and sex and all the things that can earn it an R Rating. I could see Office Space as a Pixar film. Is there a Bad News Bears in their future? A Hoosiers? A Stand By Me? A Goonies? What about a romantic comedy along the lines of The Break Up? An Eternal Sunshine? A Jerry Maguire? What about music? This movie actually had some songs like Route 66, Life Is A Highway, Cruisin. I mean could Pixar ever make a Blackboard Jungle? A School of Rock? And even further would they ever attempt something darker. An Ordinary People. An American Beauty. A Donnie Darko. An Almost Famous. Is this where Pixar is headed in the next decade? It's hinted at in Incredibles with great music but will it ever be shown? I mean couldn't you see a Dazed and Confused made by Pixar? Stories about people about what is. About life about struggle. Just plain stories with no limits. Now I dont mean to do R rated. But I mean look at the movie Ghost World. Enid is a character that could be 3D animated. Hell Clerks is already animated. American Pop and Heavy Metal where examples of anti Disney. Now for many of you your minds just went. Dude it's Pixar. They have a cute little lamp as there logo. If you want those movies you mentioned go rent them on DVD. There's enough of these stories told on film with live actors. Why waste the time rendering them? It's faster to make Garden State with Zach Braff and Natalie Portman in New Jersey than it is in Emeryville California on Marionette (Pixar's 3D Software) But that's the Aqaba in me thinking. No one has done this or at least done this right. Not in any form outside of live action and 2D. Different Genres. Following talking humans and not talking objects, bugs, insects, animals but humans. Are they headed for more adult stuff? The answer is no. There going to proceed with caution. Ratatouille is the basis for where the films are going. Incredibles was a step forward Cars is a screeching halt. Those Cars stuck watching Yellow. It's blinking because there's no traffic. No Cars. No nothing. Just giant yellow. So now we come to the red light. Time to stop. It's been a hell of year with this Why Cars Will Suck Odyssey one with it's ups and downs. I want to thank Travis Fantina for it was his website that got me to write the first draft. I want to thank Youtube, Myspace, CHUD, IMDB, AICN, Wikipedia,Olivier Archer, and of course John Lasseter,Everyone at Pixar. It has been quite a journey and now it's come to the end. It's time to go back to my life. If you can even believe that I have one.

WHY CARS WILL SUCK
Here it is. The report I sent to Pixar and the comment deleted.
Cars is gonna suck. The teaser sucked and we all know it. Sure people can defend it saying its just a teaser but thats just holding on the false hope that Pixar is going to turn it from worse to better. So far the worst of the Pixar films is A Bugs Life. Which is not a knock. Even Pixar at their worst is better than others at their best. The film isn't too terrible but its not better than Finding Nemo,Monsters Inc,The Incredibles,Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2. The reason A Bugs Life didn't work and the reason Cars wont is because they deal with two groups people hate. First off people hate bugs and insects. No one ever gets cuddly with a spider or kisses an ant. Bugs are disgusting and people hate them. Our first reaction when we see a fly is to swat it and if its an ant we squash it. Insects are inferior so we destroy them because we can. Secondly people have no emotional connections with machines. Now lets take Cars. Here are the reasons it will go along with A Bugs Life as bad but not so bad.
1) Cars have no emotional attachment with humans. Because a car is a machine. Machines like Bugs are not things people cuddle with. Or what I mean is humans have no connection with them. Machines have an isolating effect on humans. Nobody hugs their computer. Nobody kisses their cell phone. A machine is a tool. Just like a hammer. So unless treated as such the story fails. You can try to make a missile as cute as Nemo but in the end its a missile. It has one purpose to be used by a human which leads me to my next point.
2) No humans populate the world. This is a big mistake. How can you have Cars but no humans? Who built the roads? Who pumps the gas? Other Cars of course. Thats just ludicrous. Imagine Toy Story where its just Toy World. No Humans. Just Toys. It wouldnt work. Cars wont work without Human Beings. Because human beings will watch the movie and find nothing of themselves to relate to. How can the audience which is humans have an emotional connection? Look at Monsters Inc without Boo you lose the child watching. Boo made them relate to entering the Monster world. The best example of a world with cars and humans are those Chevron commercials. Those were clever and feature humans but still failed to get a movie to be released about them because all we saw was the cars. Speaking of releases...
3) Pixar has pushed the release back to be comfortable for all. Now I know usually this means that more time for a project means more time to make it better. I see it as an act of desperation. The film was scheduled to come out November 2005. It will be out June 2006. This is Pixar we are talking about. They have been working on this project for what I can assume is 3-4 years by now. If they have to stop and rework things it has to do with the reaction to the teaser or they feel what they had wasnt good enough and want it to be better. Pixar feels what they've made isnt good enough to be done November 2005. Im sorry to say this and I may be proven wrong. But you cant delay something in hopes for making it better. Lord of the Rings wasnt delayed. Each film had to be out in time for December 2001,2002,2003. Peter Jackson had every reason to ask for more time to make things perfect and there were times when Return of the King was thought to not come out in time for December. But Peter made it. Its not like Pixar said we wont make November we may have to release it a week after or in December 2005. They just pushed it back to a relaxed time for all June 2006. Im sorry but you should never relax on a film. There should always be pressure. People work better under pressure. Dont believe me look at Toy Story 2. Pixar scrapped an idea they had long into production and made what we have now as Toy Story 2.What Pixar didn't do was make excuses and say "Hey America...look we found this amazing Toy Story sequel and the one we've been working on doesnt have Woodys Roundup or Bullseye none of that stuff so were pushing the release to 2000". They didnt do it and they busted their butts to still make the release the studio set. Pixar isn't doing that this time because they think "If we dont need to be rushed or pushed and can settle on June even though we said November then fine." Slow and Steady wins the race right?
4) This film involves Nascar style Racing. Nascar is only watched so cars can blow up. If they dont who cares! Don't hate me for telling the truth. Cars going in circles no matter how fast are boring without collateral damage. Nascar is all about product placement for corporations and driving fast in circles. This does not appeal to kids. In fact this was the part of the teaser most tuned out. The character Lightning Mcqueen is a race car in a world of cars. Very original profession. Why dont they all just race around all day? Oh thats right they have baby cars to take care of and raise. This story is basically hotshot leaves the fast lane and enters an area where he learns theres more to life than winning trophies and racing. Yaaaaaaawwwwnnnn. Thats like saying your a bomb but theres more to life than just exploding. Oh course theres more to life if there was LIFE. But how can show more of life when there is only a world of Cars. Cars aren't alive their machines. They have no lives but to drive from point A to Point B. You need to treat them as the slaves they are. And I do have an idea to help this story. So fear not and keep reading.
Their next story about talking cars in a world without humans has potential to be a bad movie. The best it can hope for is to be entertaining and have some kids like it and adults not hate it but not really love it. It wont be a masterpiece like Finding Nemo but like A Bugs Life it will be an enjoyable two hours even though it doesnt measure up to the prior great films. How can I make such a claim? Am I psychic? No. But as fan of Disney and a huge fan of Pixar I place them on a pedestal. It may seem like I want Cars to suck but I dont. If I did I'd sit back and do nothing. By writing this I am doing something. It may seem that I dont understand why Pixar wants to leave Disney because I'm an outsider, but sometimes you have to stand back and look at things on the outside to see things clearer than if you were standing on the in. A world where cars have cartoon eyes and no humans driving them just feels wrong and uninspired. It feels like something a competitor would do but not Pixar. Not the company that gave me Toy Story. A story where even though the toys were alive they had rules to adhere to. They dont talk with humans or walk around like their humans. They know they are toys. You dont see Prospector start a website or open a business. He's a toy and he knows it. Granted he has intelligence he knows he cant change what he is. All toys want is to be loved and played with and as a human being we can relate with that. We can relate with emotions like jealousy or wanting to be loved the most. In A Bugs Life while Flik does make a point about who the weaker species is, he still cant change Nature. He is still a small bug and other grasshoppers will come along. Its a classic happy ending. Its like leaving a Dictator to form your own colony and fade to black. The problem is how do you stay free of dictators. Eventually other grasshopper will take over its a circle of life and Bugs Life just ends with if things suck change them and they'll never suck again. How does Flik plan to stop future grasshoppers unless he can adopt Hoppers methods of squashing them? Eventually war must happen and the Bird wont always be around to save him. I know I may have gotten off topic but at least Toy Story 2 makes mention to the fact that one day Andy will grow up and leave Woody. It doesnt end with everything is always gonna be happy like this with Andy forever and ever. The Toys except their fate. In Finding Nemo Marlin asks Dori "How do you know something bad isnt gonna happen." To which Dori says "I dont." Then Marlin lets go. This shows Marlin accepting that bad things may or may not happen regardless and he needs to calm down. It may end happy but that doesnt mean humans wont return to the reef or Barracudas. Marlin chooses not to focus on that fear to keep him prisoner. Sure I may be reading into these film endings to much since Monsters Inc and Incredibles have "happy endings" like Bugs life. But Pixar is a company that wants to push the limits of storytelling. I dont deny that Lasseter and his team arent trying to make the best film possible given the bad climate. But they need to ask themselves. What is this story saying to an audience? And I may be jumping the gun on Cars saying how its a fame cant buy happiness type story but Pixar has made no change and it's still a film where the hot shot Car takes a turn on Route 66 and finds out what hes been missing in his life.
But what if Pixar changed the story from something trite and cliche to something unexpected? A film where Humans do inhabit the world. Where Lightning Mcqueen adheres to the rules of such a world. Where he sees how all the other Cars on the track are machines at the mercy of the humans. Where he realizes car races are determined not by the hardware but by the Drivers? Man is god in his world. Man is creator. Here is my idea.
We open on a race with Lightning Mcqueen and he knows hes got the ability to be the fastest car on the track. He knows he is the fastest and he wants to prove it. He wants the trophy so bad. More than anything in his life. But its not up to him. It's up to his driver. His driver Steve is fixed. Paid off to lose the race to a car named Lucky Dan. Lucky Dan always wins because hes so lucky. Wrong. Because the other drivers let him cuz their fixed too. The cars have no say in this even though they can speak and think they don't question it and they dont talk with the humans. Its the order of things. No need in getting worked up about it Lucky Dan always gets lucky in the end. Just shut up and go along for the ride. Lightning has to accept it as well until one day he sees an advertisement on the Jumbo Tron. It's about this Hybrid car that can speak and drive all by itself! Thats right NO DRIVER! It uses a computer navigation system and its going to be at this Auto Museum on Sunday only. The directions cant be heard because the crowd gets louder and the engines rev. The race starts but Lightning notices the advertisement features a map with ROUTE 66 on it.The race starts and on the final lap his wheels swerve out of control and he crashes. The race ends Lucky Dan wins again. But Lightning doesnt care. Nor does he care that he's all banged up. He's gotta see this Hybrid car and talk to it. He's gotta get himself a computer navigation system. Could it really be true a car with NO DRIVER! He's got one chance to find out and its this Sunday. But where? The advertisement said an Auto Museum near ROUTE 66. Lightning so excited forgets how can he get there? He cant drive himself. His driver Steve sure wont. How? How? How? Suddenly Lightning is hooked up to this Tow car. (The tow car that had the bumble bee hit his eye.) He's driven off the track and taken to a Local Mechanic's Shop. The Mechanic tells Steve he'll have to order the parts special and he'll have to leave the car in the shop over the weekend. This is great news for Lightning now he has time to scheme but wait....He is lifted off the ground. No No! No! This is all wrong! He's stuck on a conveyor belt. He'll be stuck on this thing till the parts come back. He's doomed. But at the same time a young boy named Rodney Steele...Rod for short comes in late for work. Rod is a little bit older than Dash from Incredibles. He helps his Uncle around the shop on weekends. He loves to be around cars and wants to be a racer some day too. If only he could afford a race car and had a drivers license. But at his age he can't get one. Though that doesnt deter him from driving. The Tow truck tells Lightning that he'd better watch out for "Ol Steal Rod" he sometimes takes out cars to drive when his Uncle leaves the shop. He himself has been stolen on occasion for a quick drive. Lightning then gets an idea. He may be risking it but he can get Rodney to drive him to the Museum. It's worth a shot even if he has to expose himself. After Rods Uncle leaves he goes for it. Rod stays behind while a thunderstorm brews. Lightning starts to make noises which scare Rod. Rod hears this voice and wonders where its coming from. Lightning tells him to look up and Rod screams. THE CAR IS TALKING! IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE! Lightning tells the boy not to worry it's ok. He was brought to life by the uhhh lightning storm! Just like Frankenstein. (Which is what Rod happens to be watching on the TV) He's here to punish Rod for stealing those cars without his Uncles consent!...Rod is terrified! He's sorry....dont punish him. Well that all depends...He must do a good deed. Anything! Anything! Thats all I will say so far about the story. Though I do have it all in my head as to when they get to the Museum and meet the Hybrid. Now some background. I am not a screenwriter living in Hollywood. I'm a Pixar fan and I happen to be 19 years old living in Hialeah Florida. I have attended Magic Kingdom more times than I can count and have been sick to death of Disneyworld but I still love it because it was my childhood. I'm a fan nothing more nothing less. I love Pixar and would love it if whoever is working there would look through all the negative I said and realize it was harsh criticism and not cynicism. I want Cars to be the best film it can be and from the reaction I noticed in theaters and online people feel its gonna suck. I felt it too. This all began as a column I wrote for myself and thought of putting up on IMDB. But I knew no one would care or read a super long post from some kid that was basically bashing the number one studio in the world. Who the hell am I to tell Pixar what they should and should not do? Who am I to say what works and will not work? As of this moment I dont exist except on paper. I'm not some ex disgruntled employee or even some producer behind the scenes at Disney trying to stir up shit. I am a 19 year old boy who loves movies. I am proposing that if you can you will get my story idea to the powers that be. Not because I want it or because I took the time to write this but because it feels right. I know It sounds egotistical to tell a multi billion dollar company with a slew of Oscars who they should listen to. But you should listen to me. I believe in my Cars story and I believe in Pixar. I know what I'm proposing is ludicrous. Redesign the current film for June 9 2006 on some fan's idea? But it's not impossible. I still dont know what it is you guys have done till now and all I know is what I can ascertain from your website and the teaser. I still kept Lightning Mcqueen and the Tow Truck. Those dont need to be reanimated just bring the actors back in for some new dialogue and quickly touch up some animations. The boy Rod Steele is basically Dash in a sense. Just needs a new updated design and voice actor. Any other humans or cars can be taken from what you've worked on now. Route 66 is still in tact and as it stands nothing is set in stone. All thats changed really is the story. With some new additions. Its not going to be a piece of cake but it is possible to have the story of Lightning Mcqueen the car on a journey through Route 66 to find out about a car that requires no driver with the help of a Tow Truck and a young boy named Rodney "Rod" Steele who drives him. There will be many dangers along the way and many obstacles and all three will be changed by the end but I can guarantee you it's a journey worth taking. It's a story worth telling. And I hope my story is worth telling too. The story of a boy who sent a letter to Pixar with no ultimatums or threats but with honesty and sincerity. I didn't come to bash but to offer an idea and a reason as to whats going on and how I can help. I said before talking cars wont work but with my story they do and with yours they dont because the cars aren't meant to be just humans as cars but machines with intelligence and desire. The Lightning in my story cant be anything but what man wants him to be. He'll make us feel guilty when we drive our cars as to "I wonder how my car would feel." Look at the difference between Shark Tale and Finding Nemo.Which one is the masterpiece. The one where fish have cities and news reporters or the one where a father fish has a lost son in a vast sea of peril? With your story cars watch other cars race instead of just racing. Cars build other cars and everything is as it is like human beings. I find that hard for people to believe, Granted the fact the car is talking period is already a suspension of belief but that in itself is the what if part. What if Cars could talk and we as humans didn't know? Its the same concept as Toy Story except what seperates toys from cars is free will. Woody can move around and walk without Andy.

Who I am at the moment is not important. My identity will be revealed in due time. What I have to say is what is important. I find it ironic that today of all days June 9,2005 I happen to be writing this letter and sending it to your studio when it has to do with Cars a film one year away from being released in theaters. All I am asking for is your time and your attention beyond that you can take what little information I know about 3d animation (which is nothing) but what information I can bring to help the Pixar company. So without further ado. I will tell you WHY CARS WILL SUCK. What my proposal is to keep it from sucking and Later I will say WHAT THE FUTURE OF PIXAR will be. Trust me it took a long time to write and revise and it's well worth your read.

Which brings me to final reason this will bomb. Pixar already has a movie in the works for after the Disney Divorce Ratatouille and Disney is opening a 3D Animation Studio to follow Pixar with a Toy Story 3 and the soon in theaters Chicken Little. Both companies really dont wanna be together and want to go off and do their own thing but they have one more baby together which will go into custody of Disney. All the Pixar babies so to speak are owned by Disney. Disney will do whatever they want with the movies meaning SEQUELS TILL THEY CANT SEQUEL NO MORE. But your probably thinking well if they wanted out so quick why the delay in release? Simple. Pixar wants to make the best possible film. Disney wants to make the best possible money. After the teaser and negative reaction Pixar wants to make the story better they feel more time is needed. June fits that slot. After seeing Nemo do so well in the Summer of 2003 money wise than Incredibles Fall of of 2004. Disney realizes there is Shrek type money to be made in June visa v 300 million or more seeing as how its summer and school is out. If Disney and Pixar could have had the movie out June 2005 it would be. But thats not possible. So we gotta wait one more year. So after having read "WHY CARS WILL SUCK." What do I believe is the future of Pixar. I think they have to go solo or else stay with Disney. If they dont go solo. Whats the point? To trade one dictatorship for another? Right now they have power to make their own Dreamworks style place. If they go to Fox, or WB the same problems that happened with Disney will arise. The problems being MONEY. The only way for Pixar to make MONEY is to go solo. That way they get ever cent. This means Box Office and Merchandising. So if Pixar isnt thinking about going solo they may as well just stay with Disney.
Right now Pixar want a George Lucas type deal in which they just want a studio to act as a Distributor. But Pixar needs to ask themselves... Whats it take to get a movie in theaters? The answer: Film Prints and an MPAA rating below R. If you have the money to make film prints and ship em to the theater your film is in theaters. If its not NC-17 or Unrated theaters will accept it and more audiences can get in. What theater would turn down a Pixar film? What Pixar film will ever rate higher than G,PG? Corporations will then pay Pixar for tie ins. Pixar has to decide solo or bust. Bust meaning stay with Disney. But what does this mean? Well by going solo it will mean complete freedom. Freedom is good because Pixar can do whatever they want. But in a way Pixar is now responsible. If their film bombs they will have to have major lay offs. If a Pixar film bombs today then Disney takes the blow since it was their money they invested. If Pixar is independent now its Pixar's money on the line and they end up becoming A CORPORATION. They will have to please their share holders the same way Disney does and have a business mind instead of an artistic one. You cant strike gold forever. Eventually audiences will tire of these cute talking animal 3d films. Especially now with more and more of them coming out from Dreamworks, and Blue Sky. If a Pixar flick bombs they will have to sell out their characters the way Disney does with cheap sequel style DVDS or TV Shows just to make money to support themselves. Right now Pixar may be under Disneys management but they dont have the responsibilities Disney does. They can take 4 years project to project. Heck after Incredibles they could have made a film in 2010 and not lose a sweat. They are in control of when they wanna work. If they go solo. They suddenly have 700 animators to feed. These people need stability. And if Pixar doesnt release a film every year or every two years these animators dont get paid. And if the film sucks and bombs like say Catwoman did. Its bad all over. To have ultimate Freedom one must pay the ultimate price and endure Hardship and Responsibility. Just ask Adam and Eve. In a way Pixar are kids and Disney parents. Kids can leave home and be free of their parents rules "Be Home at certain time. No friends No TV etc... " But now when they live freely they have to get a job and pay for their homes and be responsible. Pixar feels grown up and is tired of dealing with its Parents Disney and want bigger allowances and less strict rules or theyre moving out. You get the analogy. In the end those who fight monsters should be careful not to become them. Pixar will eventually be a Disney one day and then they'll have the theme parks and all that jazz then some small little company will come out of nowhere and save their butt and the same thing will happen. Its the circle of life. They should learn from Disney and get off their high horse because they have had a hot streak. Selling out and cashing in go hand in hand. Disney thinks money is essential to a company Pixar says its story. Neither are wrong. Lots of Money is needed but its nothing without a good story to invest in. Both are too stupid to see they need each other. I vote that Disney and Pixar stay together even with the way things are now. Let Disney worry about the money side of things and Pixar worry about the story. Its been working since 1995 and it seems in 2006 is when it wont because Pixar has worried about the wrong things. (Money) When they need to worry about their side of things and telling stories.
Listen/watch it's kind of out of sync or read.
Anything! Anything! He must take this car too a Museum near Route 66 on SUNDAY!......Which museum?....Um err I dunno THE ONE NEAR ROUTE 66 SHOWCASING THE NEW HYBRID CAR OR ELSE!...Or else what? ...OR ELSE I'LL TELL THE POLICE YOU STOLE THOSE CARS AND YOU'LL SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IN PRISON.... Rod is convinced. Rod lowers the car and gets inside but notices its stick shift. He cant drive stick shift! A funny gag ensues of him trying to teach Rod to drive stick shift and leave the shop but he cant... Both decide its better if Rod drives manual. But then how will Rod take Lightning along with him?...They look over at the Tow Truck. Rod then steals the tow truck and Lightning is hooked on..... They set off onto Route 66...

A car without a driver is a paperweight. And a character without a desire is useless. What would a Car desire? What does Lightning desire? To have free will. Why? So he can be the fastest car when he wants whenever he wants. He doesnt want free will so he can drive around the country and see the sights. He just wants to beat Lucky Dan in a race because he knows he can. And I wanted to send this letter because I know I can. I dont need to be rich and famous or have a degree in film to exchange ideas or give opinions to Pixar or any studio. You may have the right not to read or listen to what I or others say but I have a right to talk and exchange ideas. And even if you dont read this letter or if you do and you laugh your butt off at all the run on sentences or the great length I went to talk about something you think I dont have a clue about I'll know next June 9, 2006 when I pay my ticket for Cars of the Cars movie that could have been. I'll know that when audiences come out and say "Eh that wasn't as good as their other ones but it was still cute" I can say... "Well I had an idea for Cars that I sent to Pixar." And they say "Oh what was it..." I'll be able to tell them exactly what was said here in this letter. I want to thank whoever had the burden of opening and reading this and the burden of having the choice to either pass this information along with someone else or throw it straight in the garbage. Your decision no matter what the outcome and time spent will be greatly appreciated by me forever. So to whoever you are thank you and goodbye.
P.S.As I lied in bed. I started thinking about what the hell I just wrote. Out of all those words I wrote above it still feels like it all lead to one word. No. That’s basically what that entire thing was. A very devious insane way of asking for something without really asking. Trying to manipulate or lure you in without actually ever saying why the hell it is I even sent this thing in the first place. So the question I’m asking is will you make my version of Cars the one we can see next June 9? I gotta tell you no sounds great. In fact no is much easier on my life and yours. Its easier for everyone for no. But no isn’t the word. It’s yes. Yes is the word and we know it. It’s why I came back and typed this. I’m not your typical nineteen year old. I don’t always work best with direct approaches. I always feel if I say a lot of things people will know what it is I’m trying to say but in reality they don’t know what I’m talking about. So this is the Red portion. I say Red because I feel like Red. The character from Shawshank Redemption who spent almost 30 years I believe in Shawshank and was constantly rejected from parole except for when he spoke from the heart. I think that’s what I’m doing now. From the heart. Why am I doing this? Well I guess the first is I’m not normal. Im certifiably insane. I’d have to be to send a letter like the one above and expect anything at all. The best response you can do with the letter above is trash it. It’s an eloquently thought provoking though very confusing letter written in bitterness and angst from a young teenager unsure of how to get a reaction from a world I don’t understand. I still don’t understand how it is I’ve managed to stay under the radar for so long. Or why it is I’m up at 6:10 AM writing a letter to Pixar asking them to trash years of work on a movie set to be released one year from today so they can do essentially what is my story. I’m not stupid. I’m a kid and I don’t know anything about Pixar. I don’t know the animators or the people. I’ve never been to L.A. and obviously how to pitch a movie. But I know this movie feels like it’s not all there. It just feels like something is missing. Believe you me I never thought I’d be writing this. I’m the last person to come to for sane advice but if theres anything I can say its please take the story I wrote and please do the work to release it in a year. It just feels right. Now a part of me would love to be involved in the process and work on it with you guys. I feel I’m ready in my head but on paper I’ve got zero qualifications. The only directing I managed to do was for a high school project named Beowulf that was 15 minutes. I've yet to write an actual screenplay and I'm not involved in any unions. I’m good at slinging some bullshit and I can say without ego I like my stories. But your stories. Your stories are timeless. I remember when Incredibles came out I lied to a friend and said I saw it when I hadn’t. He asked me what I thought. I said it was ok. Then later I actually went alone to see it which is the worst experience going to an all family film alone everyone in big groups but I wanted to see the film. Man I just couldn’t help but eat crow. I felt like crap for telling my friend it was ok when it was anything but. Today films are so easy to just pass off as mediocre. Not full of surprises. But The Incredibles was just magical. I thought the animation was light years ahead of what other people were doing and the story was just spectacular. The characters felt right but the only problem I had was with Boundin and Cars. Boundin didn’t satisfy me the way For the Birds did but I didn’t really dwell on that but after I saw the Cars trailer I was very disappointed. Extremely disappointed! It felt just so not Pixar you know? It felt mediocre and uninspired. The Green Day music! Ugh! It was as if my favorite studio my refuge from a world of blockbusters and soulless features was making a film you would forget about the minute you leave the theater. It felt as if Pixar had just become…average. Never before have I been so let down by a teaser and I hated the Finding Nemo teaser but loved Finding Nemo. So I was expecting the same thing here. But I just feel that I’m right. That machines like bugs don’t work no matter how cute. And that’s ok. I know John loves cars and toys and that the film you have at the moment can be filled with great moments and inspiring characters but then why the delay? Somethings stinks and I think Pixar knows it too. If everything was gravy this would be out in November and I think it’s a cry for help. I’m not a very religious person and I'm not a believer in fate and what not but I think this is THE cars story that needs to be on screen. It’s not even about me. If you want you can take my story and so not credit me I can’t even begin to not care. It’s your characters I just added Rod. I can’t sue or take action heck you could even use this letter against me and claim I have temporary insanity or something. But just to know I made a difference. A change. I contributed to something bigger than myself. That’s a feeling I look forward too. At this age I know it’ll be a long time before the stories locked in my dreams can ever get out. It’ll be a long time before people just understand me and realize I belong but this isn’t about me. This is about Cars. This has always been about Cars. It’s the reason I wrote this. I wrote this because I care. I wrote this because I wondered if it’s possible for a fan to really make a difference before the damage is done and not after. Or sure it’s easy to kick a movie down after its done and offer suggestions as to what they would have done to make it better. But that’s useless talk. I need to talk now. Now when it matters. When no one else will. I need to intervene now. Because I’ve seen it all before. When something I love (Star Wars,WWF,Disney) just loses its way. I can’t say what you should do about Disney because that’s not my place. I haven’t lived there but I know what will happen if you leave. Disney out of desperation as well as public outcry will ask for sequels and we’ll get them. They will be un imaginitave and talentless. Oh sure adults will know it’s because Pixar didn’t do them. But what of the kids? They don’t see the politics behind Pixar up there on screen they see there heroes. Woody,Buzz,Sulley,Mike,Mr.Incredible. They care now and they believe. Imagine a world without Toy Story 2 from Pixar. That’s whats going to happen with Toy Story 3. I mean come on Woody in Taiwain? Why the hell would Woody ever go to Taiwan? A nationwide search to find a Woody doll to re manufacture him? That’s like asking for someone to turn in a Tickle Me Elmo Toy it just wont happen because the toy line would update Woody because kids don’t know what the Woody from Woody’s roundup looked like nor care. They’d have a new design and that’d be the end. A smart person would know this. Disney they see it as a great way to get the Toys out on another adventure. They don’t see the soul is with Andy and Woody. That even though its not said I know Woody was Andy’s father’s favorite toy passed down. It’s a connection to his father who we never hear about in the films. It’s a connection Disney doesn’t care about. They care about money and not because they’re evil but because the sad thing is it’s the only thing they know. They used to know what your company knows now. What are really important were the stories they told and the characters they brought us. But they lost their way. They went the cheap route for money and said they had to be responsible to their people. They didn’t have fans like me reminding them we still care enough to give them a good kick in the nuts every now and again. It makes me so angry as a fan to know the only way I can contribute is with money. Like I’m not apart of this wonderful process and it ends with me just paying for a happy meal and a dvd. I should be able to express myself like now and say "Hey guys do this with Cars see if it’ll work." Help the company succeed not with my money but with my ideas. It’s so easy to want to see Pixar fail with Cars. It would prove the mighty animation studio is indeed fallible and they too are human and make bad pictures. But I don’t want that. I want Cars to be the best film it can be and if I didn’t think my story was remotely possible I’d never have sent it. If this idea is bad then you have nothing to worry about it will fall away and a good idea will surface. But the bad idea would be to deny it based on where it came from. Just because I am not employed at Pixar doesn’t mean you can’t take my idea. I understand why you wouldn’t want to. I mean if word got out it would look like Pixar wasn’t smart enough to make this film on their own and they needed some fan to tell them what they were doing wrong. Blah Blah Blah. I’m not that type of fan. In other words I’m not a fan trying to blow out your creative flame but to add more wood to the fire and keep it burning. Don’t let foolish pride ruin what could essentially be a great idea. If you don’t care about me for god sakes please pass my idea along. I made the mistake of not being honest but I am honest now. I believe this idea is great. I see such possibilities in it and I hope you can too. I hope it can be the film I go pay a ticket to watch on June 9, 2006 and if its not I hope it can inspire another idea just as great just so I can say oh my god wow I had a hand in this. I mattered in the eyes of Pixar and they actually cared about other peoples ideas even if they were sent in via a letter and not in house. Burn this, keep it as ammunition against me I don’t care but please pass my idea along at least just do me that. Lie and say it was your own. Just say hey John Lasseter what about this for the Cars story… and whatever reaction it has with him positive or negative will be fine. But please give the idea that much. Give it a chance to prove itself. They way you guys have proven yourselves time and time again that you’re the greatest creative studio working now in the world. Once again thank you for reading... .P.S.As I lied in bed. Followup.
This month has been interesting but not really. Robert Pinon and I finally met up with each other on April 3rd. Eric and I gave him a copy of Firearm which has all been screened out. We made a commentary as a special feature and Fernandez's dog died. I got to talk with Rob but sadly the connection wasn't there. After all my anger for us to hang out when we finally did it felt like two strangers in a room. Maybe there is just to much space between us. Like Pink Floyd says what shall we do to fill these empty spaces. I also feel some spaces long overdue growing between Eric Zaldivar and I. He just finished Firearm and is trying to milk it but it's over. The film is done and he is now graduating in June. I found out he's not going to any real college but a shitty community college. Like me he wants to be a director. Are goal was to move into L.A. though I think we both know thats not going to happen and by December of 2005 we most likely will be tired of each other. Sometimes people need to move on. To sort of get back in the movie making craze I came up with the idea of doing a film noir which is what this month has been Noir month. With the help of a friend Timothy we have been watching old WB Gangster films. Unbeknowst to Eric I told Rob about a film I already had in mind called [censor] which has evolved into this huge film. It is a gangster picture set in prohibition times. Thats all I can say. It invovles talking_____________ sorry can't say! But trust me it's going to kick the gangster genre in the balls big time. I came up with much songs for it and want Pooch Hall,Bruce Willis, and Britney Spears to star. The songs I believe are good enough to have been old hits.I've long since abandoned the Pixar idea I had a month back and now am fully concentrated on getting this gangster picture made which seems impossible. I also updated a previous idea with a film kinda like Pi called [censor]. I still want my Pixar films done but I need to concentrate on picking a film to do. It seems like it will be [censor] Maybe [censor]. This month we saw Sin City which didn't suck. But yes I'm still unemployed living at home with my mom. No nothing nada zilch. I live the life of an old man in retirement. Most of my friends have left and the ones I do have I feel its time they leave to. In many ways this year off from public education has been helpful. It was just last January I came up with what I believe my greatest film will be. It involves [censor] (he he). But alas I've not directed anything since Beowulf and I feel that since High school began for me in 2000-2005 I've sorta had my free time and now its time to like become Mr.Matinee (he he). My father says he found me a job doing volunteer work for some news staion but in my heart I know I don't wanna work. Hate me for saying but work is a complete waste of my talent. I would die working some shitty minimum wage job when I know I have other pressing matters to do (MY MOVIES! MY ART! MY MUSIC! MY INVENTIONS!). I did decide if I ever have a baby girl I will call her Ella Rey. Which probably means I will have one. Since my inability to connect with women is one of my highlights. I guess Aleena will be my warm up. Well so far for 05 it's been 4 months and Nada! Next month Star Wars!

One Month later.
I'm back and it's a month later. I finished editing Firearm well not really. Eric finished filming Firearm then drove me nuts cuz he didn't log the footage on his spare time. So I stayed up for a week almost trying to edit the footage for this 15 minute festival at Miami Childrens Museum. We turned it in late. I had to edit on Avid which for some reason will give you an audio underrun problem. On Friday we turned in the film where I got to drive the farthest I ever have to the Museum and then we came back and are now finishing the 30 minute edit. I have since come up with the idea of making sequels to The Incredibles,Monster Inc, and Toy Story movies. My plan was to send a VHS to Pixar pleading with them to make these films.
Then of course my plan has changed and now realize Pixar has enough on their slate they wont halt production of Cars and Ratitoulle to work on sequels cuz some kid is asking them too. Theyre damn good stories that I wish I could write out here. After Firearm now it felt good to finally finish up with the 15 minute edit and I know that tomorrow and Sunday we'll finish up the 30 minute. Then Monday I turn 19. It's my birthday and I have to now decide what to do. Eric will be graduating on June 1st to leave to FAU. Aside from Firearm,Sin City Star Wars Episode 3 and then the Firearm screening there is really nothing left for me to do but get my license (I have a restricted) and write a screenplay and make a film. My sister will soon have a little girl as I predicted we now know for sure and a baby shower. Not to mention there will be a wedding soon. Neveah Aleena Martinez is the girls name. So as March ends and April begins. Then May..then June... I'm unemployed not going to any schools and a high school graduate. Well that's all for now.
